How to Properly Recover After Surgery for Men

Injured young man recovering at homeQuite commonly, men will undergo a variety of cosmetic surgeries to help improve their image and self-esteem. As they begin to age, fat can accumulate in different areas of the male body, typically around the abdomen, flanks (love handles), and chest. Whether having undergone a small or massive body surgery, taking time off is never ideal for a man with a busy schedule. However, ensuring you are properly rested and taking care of your health during any recovery process is essential for all men.

Do’s and Don’ts for Proper Recovery

Tackling too much too soon is never a good idea after surgery, as it could impact your results and safety. It is important to make sure you consult with your surgeon about the proper precautions when recovering before you resume any physical activity.

  • DO: Shower three days after surgery. Make sure you are gentle with the incisions on your body and gently pat them dry once you are done showering.
  • DON’T: Bathe, even in treated pools. Submerging your incisions under water may increase the risk of infection. Engaging in any water sports like aqua jogging, synchronized swimming, underwater ice hockey, or extreme water balloon fighting should also be avoided (not just after the surgery but in general).
  • DO: Shave a couple days after your procedure once you have cleared it with your surgeon.
  • DON’T: Shave right after surgery, as certain areas of your body that have endured an intense procedure need time to heal.
  • DO: Engage in effortless activities such as light walking, easy housework, or anything that does not involve strong movement. It is important to moderate your heart rate and blood pressure during recovery to avoid bleeding around the incisions.
  • DON’T: Engage in activities like golfing or fishing, since those types of activities require large shoulder and chest movements.

How Long Is Recovery Time?

Depending on the type of surgical procedure, recovery time may vary. It is likely you will need to take one to two weeks off from work. Less extensive body contouring procedures (such as liposuction) may only last three to five days of recovery, and you should be fine to go back to work after. More extensive surgery (such as abdominoplasty) may require a longer recovery period of up to four weeks.
